Understanding Phone Recorders

Digital phone recorders, tape phone recorders, line taps, etc When you are on the market, considering the many types of phone recorders available, it can be a very difficult choice when deciding which type best suits your needs.  As with any form of electronics, the vast array of products is enough to confuse even the most electronically inclined person and this is why it is important to consider many things and then research many phone recorders thoroughly before purchasing one.

The first thing that should be understood and researched, is what the definition of phone recorders is.  While a specific definition can vary, depending on which type of recorder is purchased, phone recorders can be defined by the simple fact that they record phone conversations.  Phone recorders can record an entire phone conversation or only portions of it. It really depends on the specific needs of the phone recorders as to how much the product will actually record.

How much a phone recorder will record is another thing that should be researched, as, depending on individual needs, meaning if you only want to remember important facts from the conversation or record the entire conversation, will greatly influence the range of phone recorders you can choose from.  This means if you only want to record portions of the phone conversation, you will be considering a different price range and style of phone recorders then if you wanted to record entire phone conversations.

While there are many other things that should be taken under consideration when considering the vast array of phone recorders, there is one more important factor to consider.  This factor is considering if a professional grade phone recorder is needed or if an amateur system will suffice.  As already stated, phone recorders greatly depend on what the individual needs for the product is and considering what grade of system falls into this category.  Amateur systems are sufficient if you only want to record certain phone conversations or portions of any one phone conversation.  Amateur phone recorders also tend to be more budget friendly.  However, if quality, long-term recording is needed, then professional phone recorders are probably a better choice.

Another thing that may need to be considered is how phone recorders are currently being used, or why people purchase them.  Sometimes, people think they may need phone recorders, but might not fully understand how these products can be used.  Fully comprehending a product can help decide which phone recorders should be considered.  The following are some of the common ways phone recorders are used:

  • Businesses use phone recorders to record important business calls and to have phone conversations on file. This aids if lawsuits were to surface or to have recordings of business meetings that went through phone calls.
  • Investigators use phone recorders to obtain much needed evidence.
  • Spouses who may suspect infidelity may use phone recorders in order to know for sure.
  • Regular, everyday people, who may be forgetful or who want to remember important parts, word for word, of a phone conversation may use phone recorders.

While phone recorders do have many uses, there is still more that should be considered before purchasing a recorder.  Probably the most important factor that should be considered with phone recorders is the two main categories the products can be broken into.  These two categories are digital phone recorders and tape phone recorders.

Digital phone recorders have many advantages over tape recorders.  While tape recorders can be useful, it is important to consider the pros and cons of both.  The following are some of the pros and cons of both digital and tape phone recorders:

  • Digital phone recorders tend to be more durable than tape recorders, meaning digital recorders tend not to break as easily.
  • Tape phone recorders do provide hard copies of what is recorded, however, with digital phone recorders you do not have to worry about if your tape has run out and if you have recorded an entire conversation or not.
  • Digital phone recorders have more memory space then tape recorders as they do not use tapes, obviously. However, tapes phone recorders do provide hard copies of all recorded conversations.
  • Although digital phone recorders are more compatible with todays technology and digital recorders are more compact, they also are much more expensive than tape recorders.
  • While digital phone recorders are smaller, not everyone is mechanically inclined, meaning not everyone is able to figure out how to use digital phone recorders, but almost everyone has the ability to use tape recorders.

Digital phone recorders are innovative, always changing as new technology is developed. However, tape phone recorders are the foundation on which digital recorders were built.  Both types of recorders have benefits and both types of recorders will record phone conversations. It really is a personal choice, as to the quality and the price range, as to which type of phone recorder is best.

Basically, what it all comes down to, when considering the different types of phone recorders on the market today, is what you are willing to spend and on what the intended purpose of the phone recorder is.  As with many other forms of electronics, you do get what you pay for with phone recorders.  While you may not necessarily need the most expensive recorder on the market, it is also not necessarily wise to purchase the cheapest either.  If the intended purpose of the phone recorder is to record certain phone calls or portions of phone calls, then a mid-priced, tape or digital, phone recorder will usually be sufficient for the average person.

As phone recorders are a way to tap into phone conversations, essentially a form of spying, the last thing that needs to be considered is your individual states laws concerning tapping phone calls.  It is important to understand the laws governing phone recorders so that no laws are broken.  Each state, or country, can differ in what the allow and prohibit when it comes to recording phone conversations, and it is best to fully understand these laws before you purchase and use any phone recorders.
